URBAN UFOS

URBAN UFOS

By 1985 I had been exhibiting my work in galleries and museums for 10 years. I became disillusioned with the Art World, a world that seemed tame and arcane to me. I had grown tired of preaching to the converted.

Breaking out of these confines took the form of the LIGHTMOBILE, a Volkswagen Beetle covered with 1659 computerized lights. I finished building it in March, 1985, after 5 months of work. I drove it all around New York City, on more than 100 nights. I could read on the lips of thousands of people: "Oh my God! What IS it?" Using the whole city as my gallery became the most exhilerating experience of my life. Since then I have driven LIGHTMOBILE on the streets of San Francisco and Chicago, Berlin and Basel, Osaka and Nagoya. It produces the same results everywhere: expressions of joy and astonishment.

I resolved to continue presenting my work as apparitions or non sequiturs, objects to be seen 'on the fly' and thus remaining unexplained to the viewer. This section of my site illustrates my continuing series of mobile public artworks that I call 'urban UFOs'.
